Isola Comacina

Isola Comacina, or Comacina Island, is the only island on Lake Como and has been inhabited since Roman times.

It was fortified by the Byzantines and during the Middle Ages enjoyed a period of splendour.

The people of Como conquered the island in 1169 and destroyed it, together with its seven churches.

The ruins of these, alongside those of a mosaic decorated baptistery, were found after WWII and are now being studied.

From the village of Sala Comacina you can catch a small boat that goes backwards and forwards taking visitors to the discovery of this little treasure.
